I was in a music store yesterday and found all these in the used section -- plus the store sale was buy three used cds and get one for free -- always nice.
U2:
Rattle and Hum: I'd always meant to get this but never got around to it. I'm loving U2 singing
All Along the Watchtower and
Helter Skelter. I'm not a big fan of live recordings in the first place, which is probably why I put off buying this cd, I'd much rather be at the concert, but
Rattle and Hum is simply great. I love
Bullet the Blue Sky from this cd as well.
White Stripes:
Elephant: The first time I heard this cd, I didn't like it at all. I traded it for Warren Zevon's
The Wind. Because I liked
Get Behind Me Satan so much and
Elephant was used, I got it. Simply put, I don't know what was wrong with me the first time I listened to
Elephant. I got it yesterday and have listened to it three times already. So far my favorite cut is the one with Jack, Meg and Holly Golightly --
Well, It's True That We Love One Another. I'm glad I gave it a second listen.
Bruce Springsteen:
Devils & Dust: This has a
Nebraska/Ghost of Tom Joad feel to it. I haven't listened to it as much as
Elephant or
Rattle and Hum, but I'm enjoying it. I haven't watched the dvd side yet, but I have had Rob Thomas'
Something to Be for a month or so and haven't watch the dvd side. So far, after only two listens, the standout cut for me is
Jesus Was an Only Son.
Elton John:
Peachtree Road: This is my least favorite cd of the four I got, so I'm considering it my free one. At least it's a better effort than Elton has shown in years; so many of his songs have been sappy and missing the quality that was always evident in early Elton. Heck, I'm still annoyed with him for ruining
Candle in the Wind by doing that English Rose version. So even if
Peachtree Road is not quite as good as say,
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road or
Madman Across the Water, it still shows some evidence of early Elton and that's nice to see.
