I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself

10 years ago: My daughter was 1 year old and we were taking her back and forth to have the eye cancer treated that she wasn't even supposed to have because she wasn't in the correct order in the hereditary line. We were also learning that she didn't have the gene for this cancer and that I (who should have had it, also didn't have the gene.) It was an awful year.

5 years ago: I think that was the year we went to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. It was the most beautiful place I'd ever been. Check it out here: http://www.capebretonisland.com/ My mother is from Cape Breton and I never felt so close to her as I did during that visit.

1 year ago: I'd just gone back to work after 7 weeks off because of an operation. Funny, I kinda/sorta didn't really miss work that much.

Yesterday: Catching up on Battlestar Galactica. I didn't watch the old show, but this new one on SciFi is really cool.

Tomorrow: Back to work.

5 snacks I enjoy: cheese, yogurt raisins, cherries, Cheeseits, popcorn

5 bands/singers that I know the lyrics of MOST of their songs: White Stripes, Jackson Browne, Emmylou Harris, Shelby Lynne and Linda Rondstandt,

Things I would do with $100,000,000: Make sure my children's college was paid for, buy a new car, renovate my house, get the backyard landscaped, buy my husband and best friend something they really wanted and give the rest to charity. (I know that's six; that's just what I would do with the money.)

5 locations I'd like to run away to: the ocean -- maybe some island beach; Venice, Greece, Tuscany, Vienna.

5 bad habits I have: yelling, buying too much music, drinking too much Coke, not being patient enough with people, eating out too much.

5 things I like doing: blogging, reading, swimming, listening to music, walking.

5 things I would never wear: sequins; ruffles; pleated pants; really high heels; anything with bows on it.

5 TV shows I like: Curb Your Enthusiasm; American Idol; Battlestar Galactica; Lost; Law & Order: Criminal Intent (the shows I REALLY like aren't on anymore: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly and Wonderfalls.)

5 movies I like: Batman Begins; Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azbahkan; Lord of the Rings movies; About a Boy, The Sixth Sense.

5 famous people I'd like to meet: Barbara Kingsolver; Laura Bush; Joss Whedon; Bonnie Raitt; Jack White.

5 biggest joys at the moment: my 11-year old daughter; watching my 20-year-old discover who he is; thinking that my husband and I are coming up on our 21st anniversary; music; knowing that my family doesn't know about this blog yet. I don't write about them but I like having this private space. I know they may discover it and that's okay -- I just like the privacy for now.

5 favorite toys: my new laptop; my mp3 player -- best birthday present I ever had; CD burner on my computer; dvd player; cd player in my car.

5 bloggers tagged (if they made it this far & if you feel like it): Dixie Peach, Ashley, Marybeth, Beege (if she can come up from the unpacking), Jess

I right with you there in the what I'll never wear department. I haven't yet read a Barbara Kingsolver book even though I've been meaning to for years. Which one do you recommend starting with? -Flourish

I like Animal Dreams but I'm not sure that's everyone's favorite. The one I would NOT start with is Poisonwood Bible. It's an excellent book but hard to get into at first. The Bean Trees is good. Love your blog, btw.

Animal Dreams is up there on my list. I'd say The Bean Trees for starters - chronological is always good, isn't it?

Yeah -- chronological is usually good -- Animal Dreams is just my favorite.

Dr. Charles: Cape Breton is the most beautiful place I've ever been.
