Irish Music

As long as it's St. Patty's Day and all, I thought I'd show you some of my favorite Irish music:

Rum, Sodomy and the Lash: The Pogues: My brother introduced me to this. I didn't listen to it for the longest time because I thought it was heavy metal. I had never heard of The Pogues and the title sounds like something a heavy metal band would use. This album, once I listened to it, quickly became one of my favorites not just in terms of Irish music but one of my favorites in general -- great version of Waltzing Matilda.

Moondance: Van Morrison: Van Morrison has a newer cd out that's very Irish from what I understand, but I don't own it and I haven't heard it. This is my favorite all-time album from Van Morrison with the great title song, Into the Mystic, and It Stoned Me all on in one place. Plus Crazy Love -- what more can I ask for?

Long Black Veil: The Chieftains: This album was my introduction to the Chieftains and it's a good one. I'd heard the title song before but Mick Jagger and the Chieftains made me hear it anew and feel the pain of the narrator. Van Morrison also guests here along with Sting and Sinead O'Conor but the Chieftains are the focus; it's their music that touches you.

My fav Pogues album is If I Should Fall From Grace with God, but really, is there a BAD Pogues album? I harbor a secret, disgusting, ridiculous crush on Shane McGowan, no teeth and all. Fairytale of NY is my favorite Christmas song, too : )

I sang The Long Black Veil to my babies to get them to sleep until they were old enough to understand the words : )

I love the title of If I Should Fall From Grace with God and have considered getting it many times especially after I discovered how good RSL is.

I love the idea of The Long Black Veil as a lullaby!

I'm pretty sure Moondance is a perfect album.

Katya - If you have a thing for irish music (and are comfortable outing yourself), email me your address and I'll send you a CD by a local band here that rocks some serious Irish music. If you're interested.

Love Moondance, and I borrowed Rum, Sodomy and the Lash from the library (it must have been Babelbabe's recommendation?) It's so good - I'd never heard it before.
