Shopping Mania

Confessions of a Shopaholic by Shopie Kinsella: I was in the mood for something light and fun but I still approached this book with trepidation because the last "chick-lit" book I remember being hyped like this was Bridget Jones' Diary and I was not fond of it at all. Shopaholic was a different experience. It was fun and silly, but in a weird way, I found that I could relate to Rebecca Bloomwood -- Bridget just always annoyed me. Not that I've ever convinced myself that I was saving money when I overspent, but I've had those kind of thoughts before. Rebecca's attempts to reduce her debt are funny and desperate at the same time. I love the scene where she goes to the Victoria and Albert Museum and finds herself vaguely disappointed because there are no price tags on the art work -- she's sure the museum could make money if it put price tags on its exhibits. And then she discovers the museum gift shop! So much for saving money. She's funny when she tries to convince herself that she can fall in love with a man just because he's rich -- then she can pay off all her debts, buy more clothes, buy this and buy that; inevitably she ends up spending more in her mind than the man has. Her thinking process is hysterical; she starts off with something small and the next thing you know, she's buying a house. When things turn really bad for her, I understand the impulse to runaway. I've often wished that I could escape my life, although I've never gone so far as to runaway to my parent's home just to avoid the bad things going on. I'm looking forward to Shopaholic Takes Manhattan to read about Rebecca's further adventures.

I too was disappointed by "Bridget Jones' Diary". I'm pretty much over chick lit as a genre, I think. I also really dialiked "The Nanny Diaries".

As much as I absolutely *loved* the TV series, I though the book "Sex and the City" was horrendous, I think Candace Bushnell is a horrible writer and her characters completely unlikable and shallow. I attended a reading of hers when she came out with "4 Blondes" which I never bothered reading, and she seemed as shallow and unlikable as her characters.

I think the chick lit book I liked the most was "The Girls' Guide to Hunting and Fishing" by Melissa Banks.

I hated Sex and the City as a book. I could never figure out how someone read that book and said to themselves, "This would make a wonderful, witty tv show." I read 4 Blondes for some unknown reason -- maybe I thought I should give Candace Bushnell a second chance just to be fair -- it was awful as well.

I never bothered with The Nanny Diaries; I don't know why, but I didn't think I would like it. I did like The Girls' Guide to Hunting and Fishing. I'm thinking I'm with you about chick-lit as a genre. I mostly don't like it.

I am really bored with chick lit. There are some good authors (Marian Keyes comes to mind) but there have been SO many bad books that I am just tired of reading all of them. I think thats why I've been afraid to read the Shopaholic books.

I have friends who liked this first one and then didn't like the others so much, so when I think about it, I don't know about reading them either. I enjoyed this trip to fluffville, but will taking another ruin the experience for me? I don't know.

I too have avoided the Shopaholic books like the plague. And I read that horrible 4 Blondes and HATEd it. Also didn't like Nanny Diaries.

I guess that's why I read so much horror/fantasy/children's books, ha ha. At least I know waht I'm getting.

Do you have Elliot Yamin's CD? Is it good? I want to get it, I love his voice and thought he was great last year on AI.

Yes, I do have Elliot Yamin's cd -- I like it. It got an okay review in Entertainment Weekly. Elliot wasn't my favorite contestant on AI last year but I'm really appreciating how good he is now.

Oh, I forgot earlier - did you know there's a new White Stripes CD coming out, I believe next week?

just don't read the shopaholic and sister one - it's abysmal. the others are about on par with the first.

I actually liked The Nanny Diaries, but remember sobbing at the end. Their second book was unreadable.

and i have to admit, i did not like Girls' Guide. found it really boring.
