My vacation's over and I got nothing done -- I didn't get my house painted or my closet cleaned out -- nothing. Well, I did see movies, read, listen to music and watch tv. Here's some of my latest likes; I don't recall any real dislikes.
How I Live Now: Meg Rosoff. I read this because it was recommended on several blogs I read daily. The only thing I have to say about it is to agree with
Jess -- Why haven't YOU read this book!?
A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian: Marina Lewycka. I expected straight-up comedy from this book; that's not what I got. What
Tractors gives you instead is the bittersweet story of a father, his two daughters, their new stepmother and the family history that's always been hidden from the youngest daughter. The book is funny, but the daughter's discovery of this history also makes it unexpectedly layered and rich.
St. Elsewhere: Gnarls Barkley: I wouldn't have thought to buy this for myself but it was given to me and I love it. It's these tunes, with their blends of pop, hip-hop, 70s rock and soul, that I find myself singing all the time -- right now,
Gone Daddy Gone is running through my head. My other favorite makes me glad I don't listen to the radio -- it's
Crazy and I'm sure radio stations overplay that song, but who can resist a song about being crazy?
Testimony: India.Arie. She's got a lovely voice and it's nice to see her branching out into other types of music. Here she covers Don Henley's
The Heart of the Matter. I like that there is substance to an India.Arie album; I also like that the music makes you feel good.
Testimony is no exception to this pattern.
